Well-known actress Ms Harshika Poonacha launched the Nephrotic Clinic at Rainbow Children's Hospital, Marathalli on Friday. This is the first-of-its-kind Nephrotic clinic in Karnataka. The Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney disorder that causes patient's body to pass too much protein in urine. Nephrotic syndrome is usually caused by damage to the clusters of small blood vessels in kidneys that filter waste and excess water from blood. As there are no hospitals treating this disease in the State or nearby areas in the neighbouring State, the Rainbow Children's Hospital's Nephrotic Clinic is a boon for all such patients suffering from nephrotic disease. Now, the Rainbow Children's Hospital has taken lead in creating awareness on nephrotic disease among children.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Harshika Poonacha said, "It is a matter of immense pride to know that Rainbow Children's Hospital has launched the State's exclusive Nephrotic Clinic offering holistic care with advanced technology and expert paediatric nephrologists."

Dr Saumil Gaur (renowned Paediatric Nephrologist) said, "This clinic provides the best treatment for all possible ailments of kidney disease including nephrotic syndrome (Nephrotic Syndrome is a group of symptoms that indicate the kidneys are not working properly), Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS is a rare disease that affects the filters in your kidneys. When these filters are scarred, they are unable to filter your blood, which can lead to kidney damage and failure), IgA nephropathy (known as Berger's disease where a kidney disease occurs when an antibody called immunoglobulin A (IgA) builds up in your kidneys. This results in local inflammation that, over time, can hamper your kidneys' ability to filter waste from your blood), steroid dependent nephrotic syndrome, steroid resistant nephrotic syndrome and uncontrolled form of nephrotic syndrome."

Kidney ailments have increased among kids

Dr Gaur said, "The kidney ailments among kids have increased in the recent past. For example, in the last two weeks, we have treated close to 15 paediatric nephrotic syndrome cases. Currently, 400 children are under regular check up out of which 250 are in serious condition. The kidney ailments among children are increasing due to internal disturbances in the body. The nephrotic syndrome refers to change in pattern of immunity. The immunity which is supposed to protect us instead starts affecting us. There are paediatric kidney cases due to underlying structure defects. Many kids suffer from BP due to kidney diseases. Recently, a 10-year old girl from the city outskirts was rushed to our clinic and upon examination; we found that she had 25 litres of excess water collected in her body. Initially, she was extremely sick and could not breathe properly. With the help of dialysis, we had to remove the excess water. "

Dr Gaur also appealed to parents that if they see any of the symptoms like early morning swelling of eyes, parents should not mistake it to be an allergy or child sleeping too much. Parents should also be careful if the kid puts on additional weight in no time. The main aim of nephrotic clinics is to provide specialised treatment as there is a huge load of cases in our state. Many young patients are wrongly diagnosed and we get to see them at a later stage when there are too many complications. So, it is better for the parents to reach the right doctor, right hospital at the right time.

Rainbow Children's Hospital's Vice-President and Cluster Head Mr Akshay Oleti said, "We are offering specialised care to young patients. On this occasion of World Kidney Day, we want parents to be aware of this condition and Rainbow Children's Hospital is committed to provide the best treatment to every patient."
